Support Dulce, a Trans Asylum Seeker

Donation protected
¡Hola! Our household of seven has welcomed a new member to our family and we would love for you to meet and help us support her!

Meet Dulce.

Dulce made the incredible, unthinkable, trek from Guatemala to the US border (2,100+ miles in flip flops!), leaving her friends and family behind in search of a safer life here in the United States. She is a 29-year-old trans woman currently seeking asylum.

Rather than have her case heard from the Cibola Detention Center where she had been housed the past few months, we volunteered to sponsor her and have her live with us here in Lafayette, California. (One trans woman died last fall after being abused at the Cibola Detention Center. And another trans woman was just murdered after being deported back to her home country.) We are so happy to be able to provide Dulce a much safer environment while she goes through this process. Together we are laughing and learning our way through language and cultural barriers, and grinding our way through the frustratingly complicated, intimidating, nonsensical maze of bureaucracy meant to make it difficult to help people reach safety. One of those difficulties is the fact that she is legally barred from working for the next five months, leaving it on us to support her. This is where you come in!

How you can help:

This process can take a year or more. In becoming sponsors, we’ve signed on to house her, feed her, transport her to ICE meetings and court dates, find her legal representation, take care of her medical needs, help her find and connect with communities, and help her learn English (so far she’s learned “What’s up”, “Good morning” “Hello” “Thank you” and “Bye Bye”). The money raised through this GoFundMe will go towards food, BART tickets, and other needed transportation to check-ins, court dates and support groups, toiletries, cell phone service, clothing, legal and medical fees, English classes and more during that time. Any extra funds raised will go towards Dulce’s move to independence and building her life here in the United States.

Way too often the headlines these days feel overwhelming. But the small act of contributing to this fund is a direct action in response to these headlines and will mean the world to a person severely impacted by this administration. Dulce is as sweet as her name and deserves a chance for a safer life. You can help her feel the welcoming love and support this country should have given her upon her arrival!

Additional/alternate ways you can help us/Dulce/other trans asylum seekers:

• Do you speak Spanish? We may need translators to help with appointments! (Julia, our only fluent Spanish speaker in the house is currently working and in school and not always available)

• Can you help tutor her in English as she learns?

• Gift cards of all kinds are always welcome!

• Clothing: size 0/1 pants, size small shirts, size 8 shoes. Her favorite color is pink! She could also use more warm clothes like sweaters and sweatshirts.

• Have any ideas for resources, people, or organizations willing to help?

• Support the Santa Fe Dreamers Project , the organization that pairs asylum seekers with sponsors.

Thank you for being a ray of sunlight in Dulce’s extraordinary journey!
