A week ago today, my sister Colleen Meehan, and her granddaughter, were hit head on in a multi vehicle collision. While thankfully her granddaughter did not have significant physical injuries and has been released from the hospital, my sister was not as fortunate. Colleen suffered a serious head injury which involved her scalp being degloved which will cause significant, permanent disfigurement. A large majority of her ribs were fractured, she suffered blunt force trauma to her heart, her right ankle and all the bones in her right foot are shattered, her artery was severed and her foot was partially degloved. She suffered significant blood loss and required blood transfusions. While she has already undergone two surgeries she is looking at many, many more. While she is now stable, every few days her trauma team is evaluating her foot and ankle injury to continue to monitor the viability of her foot. If the foot is determined to be viable in the upcoming weeks, at that point, reconstruction will be attempted. Colleen is looking at not only many difficult surgeries ahead, but also a very long recovery. Colleen is the sole income earner and the caregiver of her spouse and granddaughter. This accident, and resulting injuries, will have long lasting physical and financial effects. While not only being an amazing sister, daughter and family member, a cherished neighbor, an involved community member of her Mashpee, Ma Community and town volunteer for community events and town voting. She is passionate about animal rescues and has been known to adopt "just one more" animal that can't find a home that will adopt them. She is known to always go above and beyond for not only anyone who calls her a friend but also any stranger who will shortly become a friend if Colleen has her way. Colleen frequently and lovingly references her co-workers at the Mahoney Garden Centers as family. I'm hoping to start this go fund me to cover some immediate expenses in the upcoming months as we navigate the next steps making sure Colleen and Colleen's family is taken care of.
