Support Caldo de Piedra Restaurant

The Gachupin-Velasco Family left their hometown of San Felipe Usila, Oaxaca  17 years ago, and arrived in the state capital of Oaxaca City to share their beloved pre-hispanic cuisine and namesake delicacy "Caldo de Piedra”, or Stone Soup, with the world. In those 17 years, the family has grown their business to two restaurants and have become both nationally and internationally recognized for their Chinantecan cuisine.
In the past year, they have invested in the infrastructure of both their restaurants. Adding a new roof to one space, and building out their bar and coffee bar in the other. These projects gave so much hope and excitement at the beginning of 2020 for more growth as their business continued to expand.
However, since the COVID-19 outbreak, this positive outlook on the future has been paused. The Gachupin-Velasco family has felt the effects of the pandemic since March. They have been unable to keep a steady stream of income because of the mandated restaurant closures. After careful review of their budget, the family will not be able to continue staffing or paying for the necessary overhead to keep their business going by the next month without community support.

The Gachupin-Velasco family is in need of financial aid that will go towards paying the next two months of rent, electricity, water, gas and internet bills, and help support their small staff. By meeting these financial goals, the family will finally have some peace of mind and can devote their time to strategically saving and planning to stay in business for the rest of this year. Please be aware that there is no donation too small. Because your dollars will be exchanged into pesos, even a twenty or fifty dollar donation will make a real impact!

Caldo de Piedra is a prehispanic dish from the indigenous Chinanteco community that is a symbol of generosity towards community and visitors.  Anything you can donate to help support this family— so that they may continue to share this important dish with the world— will be greatly appreciated. Your support will never be forgotten, and you will always have friends in Oaxaca, whenever you may find yourself here.
