Bowe’s Animal Rescue needs your help!
Bowe’s focuses on dogs who have been dumped in fields and orchards.
On 12/29 we were made aware of three matted dogs that were dumped in an orchard. We rushed out knowing they were in the cold and the rain was coming again. Based on other comments the dogs have been out there for a month or more. We located the dogs and trapped them since they wouldn’t come to us. They were are very skinny and matted. We started basic vet care and scheduled them for the vet. We named them Lexi, Lucy, and Lana.
1/2. Lexi had signs of not wanting to eat and I could hear her breathing hard. We took her to the vet where they did bloodwork and Xrays. The vet determined that she had pneumonia and a possible abscess in her neck. We went home with medications to treat her around 9pm.
1/3. Lexi’s breathing was worse by 7am and we decided to take her back to the vet. By 10:30am she was declining and more tests were ran. It was discovered that she was more anemic and she had an issue clotting her blood. This pointed to possible poison. After a few hours of treatment and the oxygen chamber we had to make the tough decision to humanely euthanize her.
1/3. Lucy and Lana were groomed and doing fine.
1/4. Lucy was acting slightly off so we decided to go back to the vet and do a full work up on both Lucy and Lana. Lucy’s blood work showed that she was anemic and had an issue clotting her blood, just like Lexi. Lana still had the clotting of her blood but her red blood cell count suggested she could also have gotten into poison but was reacting just a little slower. Both dogs were started on vitamin
k and we were told the Lucy needed to go to the ER for further treatment.
We drove straight to the ER and Lucy continued to decline. We noticed she had swelling in her leg and chest, possibly where blood was pooling to in her body. We were given a treatment plan for her for the next 24hours which also included a blood transfusion.
1/5/26 7:30am update:
Lucy is still at the ER. Her clotting factor is back in normal range but her red blood cell numbers are still decreasing. They will retest in a few hours. This could determine if she needs a blood transfusion. Currently she has only received plasma to help with the clotting and not blood. They said she is eating good and looks a lot better than yesterday when she was hospitalized.
Lana, her sister, is still being closely monitored at the rescue. She still has great energy and is eating. She is getting vitamin k 2x a day.
1/5 10am update:
Lucy’s red blood cells were at 21% around midnight? And are now at 15%. Starting blood transfusion and then will check % in a few hours. Her blood clotting is still in normal range.
Between the last few days we have spent $10,000 trying to save these dogs lives. Lucy and Lana could still potentially require more medically. The ER bill was for 24 hours of care so if she has to stay another night that will be additional funds. We rely solely on donations from the public. Any donation helps to save these girls.
