Support As The Crow Flies' Dutch Golden Age Concert

Donation protected
Over the past few months, I have been digging through libraries, recordings, and archives to put together a concert of instrumental music from the Dutch Golden Age. While much of our historical performance repertoire focuses on the music from Italy, France, Germany, and England, the Netherlands offer a rich history of music-making that deserves a full exploration.

In this concert, As the Crow Flies presents several works by composers from the Low Countries, including Benedictus Buns, Carel Hacquart, Unico Wilhelm, Pieter Hellendaal, Phillipe van Wichel and Cornelis Schuyt, amongst others. This program seeks to explore the cosmopolitan influences while celebrating the uniquely Dutch qualities of this beautiful music.

While all musical projects take a lot of love and work, this is something that I have never done on this scale -- archival research, manuscript reconstruction, grant writing, concert promotion, social media content creation, hiring musicians, preparing and leading rehearsals on music that isn’t well known, launching a group, … the list goes on and on. This will be the first performance of As The Crow Flies and I am proud to be collaborating with colleagues and friends who bring a wealth of artistry, knowledge, and creativity to each rehearsal and performance. I could not think of a better team of musicians to share this music with everyone.

I'm delighted to announce that we have received financial support from the Holland Society New York as well as the Gotham Early Music Society. This concert will be presented as part of the GEMS Midtown Concert Series on November 14th, 2024 at 1:15 pm in St. Malachy's Actor's Chapel, NY, and will be livestreamed on the GEMS website and YouTube. In order to cover our remaining expenses, I am hoping to raise $600 which will go directly to supporting our ensemble for this concert.

As The Crow Flies is an energetic ensemble of musicians from the Juilliard School and Koninklijk Conservatorium den Haag, dedicated to exploring and reviving the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. By journeying through the historic trade routes of the past, this collective uncovers and brings to life long-lost musical treasures. Their repertoire spans from the heart of Europe and the Low Countries to the distant corners of the West and East. Through their performances, As The Crow Flies aims to deepen our appreciation and understanding of historical performance practices, offering fresh insights into the rich tapestry of early music.
