Support a DODEA Family: The Hart Family

Donation protected
Joel Hart and his two children, Emma (8) and Noah (6) are facing an uncertain and overwhelming future due to a recent decision by the agency for which he works. After 6.5 years with the agency, an investigation was launched into his hiring to determine whether he was “ordinarily” resident in Korea prior to being hired, which means that the employee is determined to have planned to stay indefinitely in Korea. The result of the investigation was a determination that Joel was in fact “ordinarily” resident, and therefore, his hiring was invalid. The results of this determination are that his employment and benefits with his agency are immediately terminated, and he must repatriate himself, his children, and his household goods on his own without the financial or logistical support of the agency.

Joel began his tenure at Seoul American Middle School teaching 6th and 7th grade English/Language Arts and then excessed to Humphreys High School where he has been an active member of the community teaching high school ELA and business. He is heartbroken to be leaving his students in the middle of the year and to say goodbye to the students, colleagues, friends, and the community at large that had become home. His children are also heartbroken to be leaving their friends and the only home that they have known.

After more than 18 years in Korea, Joel and his children will be moving to Denver, Colorado to be near his family and to try to reestablish their lives there. Joel hopes to be rehired by DoDEA for the next school year, but Korea will not be an option due to the decision, so he is saying goodbye to a significant portion of his adult life.

Joel is hoping that this unexpected change in circumstances will result in another long-term period in his life that brings all of the wonders and adventures that have resulted from his time in Korea.

Finally, Joel, Emma, and Noah will be packing out on January 28 and will be flying to Denver on February 2. Your love and support are appreciated.
