Claire's School of St Yared Project

As a former teacher who now works in advertising, I believe deeply in the transformative power of education and in using communications for social good.
Recently, I've been offered an absolutely incredible opportunity to combine these passions by working with The School of St Yared in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia over June 2016.
The School of St Yared provides a world class education free of charge to some of the poorest and brightest children in Addis Ababa. They teach their students skills that will enable them to become the future leaders of their communities, lifting themselves and those around them out of poverty. Each child's education is sponsored by individual donors, and all fundraising is done through a lean team of dedicated volunteers.
The school is at a critical time in its development - it's now almost seven years old and is transitioning from a small project sustained by its founders' personal contacts to a self sustaining entity and a pioneer for education in Ethiopia. There's an increasing need to tell more people about its amazing work to secure much needed funds for its future. I will spend June 2016 helping the team develop strategies to raise awareness of their work and engage new sponsors.
All money currently donated to the school goes towards the pupils' education. For my project to be as impactful as possible, I need to raise money for a marketing budget that will enable us to bring to life ideas that will put the School of St Yared on the map and enable them to fundraise in a sustainable fashion in the future. If there's any money left over at the end of my project, I will donate it to the school directly.
As a focus for my fundraising, I am going to run a half marathon in Sydney on May 15th. It would be incredible if I could have met my fundraising target by the time I cross the finish line.

I am extremely grateful to WPP and The International Exchange for giving me the opportunity to work with the School of St Yared, and to my agency, GPY&R Sydney for supporting me and giving me a month to go to Ethiopia.
