Students Against Gun Violence

Donation protected
Students' and youth voices are often disregarded in the fight for national change. However, in wake of the February 14th school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, student activism is making headlines in the U.S. School shootings are an all too common reality, and those who are most likely to be affected by gun violence have been inspired and motivated to make the legislative change needed in our government. Youth and people of color are disproportionately affected by the lenient gun laws in America.

Support high schoolers across Portland as they plan to take part in a nationwide walkout on April 20th, 2018. Youth organizers within PPS are planning a walkout teach-in, where students will exit their schools in the morning and march to a venue where guest speakers from the ACLU, Black Lives Matter, and other organizations will educate students on gun violence and how to be an effective student activist.

Students will  be empowered to fight for legislative change in Oregon and across the country. This is a rare opportunity for young people to be supported and led by their peers in a powerful and change-worthy manner.

Because we want to support the venue that is graciously donating the space to our event, we need to raise money for labor costs as well as the rental of a projector, sound system, and stage. This will cost upwards of $5,000. Additionally, extra financial support will help with outreach and publicity of the event, such as buttons and posters. Any extra donations that are not necessary for the event will be donated to the ACLU. Updates will be given continuously on how the money is being spent. We want all PPS students to be able to attend this event, so networking is key.

I am a student at Franklin High School, and will be collecting the donations for April 20th. In conjuction with other Franklin Students and those across PPS, I hope we can make this dream a possibility. To make withdrawals on GoFundMe, one must be 18 or older. Due to this, a parent will make the withdrawals on the account. I will be making the payments to the venue under the supervision of an adult and other student activists.

Your donation could help change minds and inspire this generation to create lasting change in our government. We all want to feel safe in our schools, home, work, and community, and giving students a time and place to speak their minds can be a life changing opportunity. Civil action can be one of the most effective mechanisms of change; please don't pass up the opportunity to help youth grow into the people they wish to become.

We cannot thank you enough for your donations. It is so empowering to have such a strong and caring community behind us.
Thank you for supporting the leaders of tomorrow.
