Student in Need Escaped Abuse

Donation protected
Thank you for considering donating to help a young woman in need, with a bright future.

This young woman, an international graduate student at Oregon State University, finds herself cut off from family resources in her home country, and struggling to make ends meet in Corvallis. She began her studies in Oregon with her family’s assistance. However, it quickly became clear that her family’s assistance came with strings attached.

She was called back to her home country to participate in an arranged marriage she did not want. Her family threatened to cut off all assistance if she did not participate in the marriage. The student, after refusing to participate in the marriage, was threatened, abused, and physically confined to her family’s home with her passport and phone confiscated. She was able to escape that situation and return to the United States, where she seeks long-term residency. However, she is now dealing with health effects from the stress of her situation and is unable to access physical and mental health resources on campus until back debt for several terms of university health insurance is paid. She has maintained her visa status but is at risk of losing it if she cannot make tuition payments for partial enrollment for Spring term.

The student is exploring other immigration options and has legal assistance, but she may have few realistic options if she cannot make the payments necessary to secure her immediate continued university enrollment. She is bound by restrictive work terms for international students. Although she is working the maximum number of hours on campus to try to meet her costs (in addition to maintaining good grades and seeking as much assistance as possible through university services), she is now turning for assistance to anyone who may be able to help her get on her feet to stay in the United States and avoid further abuse by her family in her home country. Her name and country are withheld for purposes of privacy and security.
