Strike fund for the Ministry of Justice cleaners, security guards and receptionists.
On 22nd & 23rd January 2019 the cleaners, security guards & receptionists at the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in Westminster, London, will be walking out together on strike , in what will be the largest ever strike of outsourced workers in any UK government department in history.
The strike will also be coordinated with the outsourced staff from the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), making it the first cross-government department strike of outsourced workers in history too.
All the MoJ workers are asking for is the London Living Wage of £10.55 per hour (they currently only receive £9 an hour - which is an official poverty wage), plus parity of sick pay and annual leave entitlement with the MoJ civil servants. In other words they are asking for dignity and equality which should not have to be fought for at the Ministry of Justice!
Despite the MoJ workers union United Voices of the World (UVW) inviting the contractor OCS and the MoJ to sit down and resolve this dispute, all their invitations to date have been arrogantly rejected showing they have a callous disregard for the dignity and wellbeing of the workers which keep the MoJ safe and clean.
When they win this strike it will not only be the workers on strike who get the pay rise they so need and deserve, it will also be the nearly 3,000 other staff at the MoJ who are also paid poverty wages . It may also lead to the government ensuring that all workers in their departments, whether in-housed or outsourced, get at least the London Living Wage which will give £millions of additional pounds to London's working poor.
As you can see the significance of this dispute cannot be overstated. However, in order to win they need your support because they will not be paid for the days of strike action they take, and they may need to strike for more than the first 2 days as well.
In order to be able to afford to fight until victory they need a solid strike fund. Any amount will really help and every last penny will go directly to the workers on strike. We need the funds as soon as possible and by the end of January at the latest, so please donate whatever you can afford as soon as you can afford it.
