As most of you will already know, my family and I were heavily affected by the horrible disease of cancer – in particular lung cancer. After fighting the disease for 17 years, my Mother lost her battle in late 2014. This has left me with a motivation to help those who are also affected, as I know how tough this time can be.

Throughout my childhood my brother and I have been very involved in football and basketball, travelling hundreds of kilometres a week. We have been very fortunate to have a family who never let circumstances stop us from doing what we love. This has ultimately left me with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. For some families this isn’t possible through lack of time due to hospital visits or time spent looking after loved ones. For others it may be financially impossible due to the cost of endless treatments and medical bills, both resulting in kids missing out on having the best possible childhood.

Obviously I cannot create time for families with cancer, but I can provide some financial support, and this is why I am going to be raising money and giving it to a family in need, to try and ease the stress of  going through a horrible time due to cancer.

On the 29th of June, through the support of my basketball club Eastern Mavericks, I will be hosting a ‘white night’ when we host the North Adelaide Rockets at St Francis De Sales College in Mount Barker. White is significant to me as it’s the colour of ribbon shown to support lung cancer. Everyone is encouraged to wear something white and fill the stands to show their support. Donations can be made on the night, with multiple raffles also planned for the evening so bring some cash!

In addition to this, I will be shaving my head at half time of the women’s game beforehand. For those who know me this is a very big deal as I love my hair. Cancer patients, however, often have no choice when it comes to losing their hair. I have also made a deal with my brother that if I raise $1,000, he will join me in shaving his hair, so get donating!

I would like to give a massive thank you to the following for their help:

- Eastern Mavericks basketball club committee, in particular Bridgette Warhust

- My family, in particular Aunty Rachel

- All Star photos (Kelly Barnes)

In conclusion, ANYONE can donate at any time through this GO FUND ME account. I understand you might not be able to make it to the ‘white night’ due to commitments but let’s try to pack out the stadium. Your donations will give me the opportunity to help a family in need, with the chance to help multiple families if enough money is raised, and this will mean the world to me. So please buy yourself a T shirt and donate to a good cause!
