What a wildly challenging year it has been for us all! One thing 2020 has made abundantly clear is that our challenges and struggles in this country are not “equal.” I have a simple idea to make a small step toward addressing these inequities and help families and marginalized members of my local Chico community and I hope those of you who can will help!
The idea is basically this...Many of us will receive, or have received, our stimulus check from the government. Many of us (i.e. middle class, still employed, enjoying retirement) do not “need” these checks. Of course there is always something we could use them for, but I am asking us to consider the “need” for which these checks are being sent out.
*Are you able to pay your rent or mortgage?
*Are you able to put food on the table consistently for yourself and your family?
*Do you have functioning WiFi and the equipment necessary to make work and school from home accessible?
If you answered yes to these questions, I hope you will join me in donating all or a portion of your stimulus check to families and individuals for whom the answers were no.
I know there are so many amazing organizations we could donate to. However, the idea behind this fundraiser is local, grassroots and direct, which means you need to SHARE this with YOUR circles for our success at giving meaningfully to our community!
I am offering to coordinate the money we raise. I will give ALL the funds generated here to local families through public school case managers who have identified families in need. I will also be donating a portion of what we generate here to The Stonewall Alliance QTPOC fund https://www.stonewallchico.com/qtpoc-fundwhere community members can request funds directly for one time needs. Your “unneeded” money will go directly into the hands of community members who NEED it.
The checks are for $600. If 100 of us donated just $100 of that, we would meet the $10,000 goal! Isn’t that amazing? Let’s put those dollars into the hands of members of our community who need them most! Please make your donation ASAP and share this message widely as I will only leave this fundraiser up for the month of January.
