Shipping Off to Guinea!

Donation protected
Hello All!! Stephanie Bielek here! As some of you know, I have decided to begin a medical mission trip this year and have been accepted to join Mercy Ships starting August 26th, 2018.

I will  be serving with Mercy Ships in Conakry, Guinea! Mercy Ships has been operating a fleet of hospital ships in developing countries since 1978. Mercy Ships mobilizes people and resources worldwide to deliver free healthcare onboard its several hospital ships including the Africa Mercy. The Africa Mercy, is a fully functioning hospital with more than 1,500 crew members who serve annually.

I have been working as a nurse in Washington D.C. for the past three years on an oncology unit and I have always felt the desire to go abroad and use by skills as a nurse to serve on medical mission someday. Now, with Mercy Ships, I feel I have the opportunity to be a part of this organization’s mission through serving as a nurse aboard the Africa Mercy for 5 months!

Mercy Ships relies on a team of volunteer crew members who pay their own room and board, travel and personal expenses while serving. This means everything from flights to Guinea, to my toilet paper while on board! (Yes really). This allows general Mercy Ships donations to be used for direct patient care, community development programs and other costs associated with its Field Service initiatives. From doctors to nurses, engineers to deck hands, housekeepers and teachers, everyone serves as a volunteer. I have been accepted to work on their busy surgical ward caring for post-surgical patients.

Since Mercy Ships requires that I raise 100% of my support, I will need to raise $5,000 total!! I am asking anyone who is able and willing to donate as much or as little as you feel appropriate for you.

The support from my friends and family means so much to me and I am thankful for any and all donations however big or small. Any support you can give will go a long way toward helping me make this medical mission trip a reality when I leave this coming August.

I will be posting a blog once I arrive and start working in Guinea so that any and all of my supporters back home will be able to follow along and see pictures and stories about life on board. If you want to check it out copy the link at https://sbielek.wixsite.com/ships
