Marie Johnson is a 32-year-old intelligent, funny, and beautiful woman. Marie is living with a condition she has had from birth called quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
Marie is one of the approximately 130,000 adults in the UK living with cerebral palsy, making up one of our country's largest disability groups.
A group of individuals who are essentially abandoned by the authorities once they turn 18.
Step Up For Marie intends to help raise awareness of this unfair situation for adults and their families struggling alone with the difficulties of CP and ultimately host fundraising events to help raise the money Marie needs to buy vital equipment.
Here are Marie's own words...
"My mum went into premature labour at 27 weeks. The cord was around my neck and there was a delay in my head coming out. They didn’t realise I was in a breech position and mum had to have an emergency cesarean. I weighed 3lbs 3oz and my birth weight dropped to 2lbs 7oz. As a result, I cannot feed, dress, walk, stand, toilet, shower, or go out alone without assistance and special equipment.
For the past 9 years we have had many appointments with so many services and have still got nowhere.
We have totally struggled as a family and as individuals. It has affected us all mentally and emotionally. It has also affected me physically.
For 9 years now I have not been sat in the correct position for my posture. I struggle to drive my wheelchair properly, use my joystick, use my computer, or eat and swallow properly. Often we are treated with rudeness and just not listened to. We have given up and are now fundraising for all the equipment I need. Please help me to sit in the correct position for me. Any donations would help us get the wheelchair walker/ standing frame, neater eater, and bed. At the moment I am feeling pretty fed up with my situation and how we have been treated
I live with my mum Maria Grossmann and my sister Isobel and my four dogs. It would be nice to have no pressure stress, be comfortable and be mobile again to my full potential.
I don’t know my life expectancy but these struggles have made it difficult recently. Being sat wrong every day and not being able to stand and walk affects my whole body and its functions. Also being dictated to by professionals in an unpleasant way by people who seem to have no compassion or empathy or caring, does damage to people like myself.
Thank you for reading this. I am grateful for whatever help you can offer me and my family.
Thank you, Marie Johnson"
