Background:

In late April 2026, Shanelle and her sister were harmed during a hostile incident with neighbors right outside her front door—on her porch—while her children were in the car nearby. What should have been a normal moment at home became a deeply traumatic experience just steps away from where her children were waiting. Alhamdulillah, thank God, they are now safe, but the impact has been serious and ongoing.

This was not an isolated situation. There has been a pattern of vitriol and hostility from these neighbors toward Shanelle and her children, and despite what has happened, there has still not been a clear or sufficient resolution. Her voice has not been heard or considered.

Following the incident, Shanelle and her children were unable to remain in their home safely and spent several days displaced. While she has since returned, the sense of safety has not been restored. She continues to experience the emotional effects of what happened, including flashbacks, and is navigating daily life in an environment that still feels unstable.

In the aftermath, the situation has become even more complex. Despite being harmed, neighbors have filed against Shanelle, and she now has a court hearing scheduled for Monday—without full legal support in place yet. If the outcome is not in her favor, she and her children face the real possibility of eviction, causing renewed and real displacement.

She has reached out to the Council on American-Islamic Relations for some initial guidance, but is still in urgent need of primary legal representation as she prepares to navigate this process. At the same time, she is needing to care for her children while carrying the emotional and logistical weight of everything that has happened.

Shanelle is someone people turn to when they need support, clarity, or simply to feel less alone. She is a mentor, a guide, and a steady presence in her community—someone who shows up for others again and again, without asking for anything in return. She creates spaces where people feel seen, grounded, and cared for. Now, it is time for us to show that same support in return.
