My 21st birthday is coming up — the birthday that almost didn't happen due to a serious illness. But I'm in recovery and I want to use this chance to raise funds for something I wholeheartedly believe in.
Two years ago the world found out that LGBT people are being persecuted, tortured and killed in Chechnya for being who they are. Back then I was still living in Moscow and this news only supported my need to leave Russia as soon as possible. Right now I'm studying social work and living in Germany. I am safe and I am free to be who I am. People in Chechnya aren't.
To this day these crimes are being committed in Chechnya; to this day the authorities and people responsible for those crimes haven't been brought to justice.
What is happening in Chechnya falls under the article «crime against humanity». Russian LGBT Network is doing everything in its power to evacuate the people in danger and to put a stop to the horrors happening there. It uses the funds raised to evacuate the people, who are in deadly danger from Chechnya, offer them safe housing, medical, psychological assistance and the opportunity to leave Russia. In two years than 150 people have been safely evacuated from Chechnya. Many more need immediate help. Russian LGBT Network collects evidence and spread honest information about the crisis. There's a hope that this might force Russian authorities and the international community to take measures to stop the persecution of LGBT people in the North Caucasus and to bring those responsible to justice.
