South Tacoma United Soccer Club, STU, is a youth soccer league located in Tacoma, Washington. We are the oldest soccer club in Pierce County and may be the oldest in Washington State. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our athletes, families, and community.
Unlike many Washington youth soccer leagues, over ninety percent of our athletes qualify for scholarships or financial assistance. In many cases, our athletes are unable to afford registration fees.
In an already challenging time, we are asking for your support.
Athletes in our community do not have equal opportunities. Our goal is to ensure that no athlete is turned away, especially due to financial constraints. We believe that no family should have to experience the burden of deciding between feeding their family and registration fees for athletic programs.
Our data exemplifies the impacts of systematic racism our athletes, families, and community experience on a daily basis. On the field, our athletes consistently report experiences of micro and macro aggressions, like racial profiling and the overt use of negative stereotypes. STU wants to elevate our athletes, families, and community to a new level by educating and providing tools to support them on and off the field.
Bridging the Gap: COVID-19 further marginalizes our athletes and their families. While other clubs are holding virtual practices and events, small group and one-to-one coaching, etc., STU athletes and families do not have the same, equitable access to technology and resources. Should our community return to a shelter-in-place model or be in a Phase prohibiting in-person activities, resources you share will be allocated to bridging the gap many of our athletes already experience. By collaborating with local organizations, like Tacoma Public Schools, STU will work to ensure that all of our athletes have access to technology, internet, and tech training, leveling the already existing technology gap.
In addition to accepting financial contributions, we are hosting online events like silent auctions to support our athletes.
