Sponsored 1 mile Car Pull

Matt’s Sponsored car pull

Most of you will know that Matthew is partially sighted, some of you possibly don’t know and I know that some of you often forget because Matthew works hard to live as independently as possible. He was diagnosed at the age of 8 with Macular Dystrophy (Stargardt).

Here’s the science bit

Stargardt disease is a rare inherited condition affecting one in 8,000 to 10,000 people. In Stargardt’s the light-sensitive layer of cells in the macular region of the eye degenerate. The macular is the area at the back of the eye which is responsible for fine detailed vision

Whilst people with Stargardt’s do not lose their peripheral (side) vision, many people will reach the point of severe vision loss. At the moment, Stargardt’s is untreatable.

The thing is that although Matthew manages as well as he can, day to day, in this little town, with friends and family around him, there are many aspects of daily living that are always a struggle. Things such as watching TV, using a phone or computer, playing on the Xbox, reading, identifying denominations of money and recognising faces are all difficult and Matthew has to adapt to each situation as it happens.

But Matt has found a gadget which could make a lot of these things so much easier.

The Orcam MyEye 2 https://www.orcam.com/en/myeye2/  is a voice activated device that attaches to virtually any glasses. It can instantly read to the wearer text from a book, smartphone screen or any other surface, recognise faces and help the wearer to live a more independent life. It conveys visual information audibly, in real-time and offline. This gadget would make a significant difference to Matthew’s daily life.

The downside

Unfortunately the Orcam is at a significant cost of £3000.

The upside

In true Strongman tradition Matt is going to pull a car, from Hamfields Leisure (the old Berkeley Power Station club) up to the Boars Head in the town.

Because of current restrictions we are unable to hold the usual fund raising day but hopefully some of you will stand along the route to cheer him on. We are hoping that you his friends and family will be willing to sponsor him to complete this truck pull and hopefully bring him closer to purchasing this gadget.

We have set up this fund raising page and any amount you would be able to give would be appreciated. If we manage to raise over our target then Matt wants to donate any excess to guide dogs for the blind.
We would be eternally grateful for any amount you can afford to help us on our way to reaching this target and enabling Matthew to be more independent.
