Aiutaci a ridare speranza a Maggy, una coraggiosa Podenca portoghese

Maggy è una giovane Podenca portoghese trovata rannicchiata su una coperta, ferita e sola, ai margini di una strada dopo essere stata investita. Qualcuno le aveva lasciato una ciotola con dell'acqua, ma l'avevano lasciata lì, ferita e terrorizzata.

Era immobile, con gli occhi pieni di paura e dolore.

Qualcuno dopo un giorno intero l'ha raccolta e portata in una clinica veterinaria a Ponte Da Barca, dove le radiografie hanno evidenziato una gravissima frattura all’omero anteriore sinistro.

Il veterinario ha deciso di operarla, inserendo un ferro per tentare di stabilizzare l’osso.

Purtroppo, quella che doveva essere la sua salvezza si è rivelata solo l’inizio di un calvario. Dopo l’intervento, Maggy è stata affidata temporaneamente a una casa foster. Ma dopo un mese, non potendo più tenerla, hanno contattato la nostra associazione partner Bring Portuguese Podencos to Life.

Luisa, una delle socie volontarie, è corsa a prenderla e l’ha portata da Irene, una persona meravigliosa che apre sempre le porte di casa ai cani più in difficoltà. Appena arrivata, le condizioni di Maggy sono apparse subito preoccupanti.

Dopo appena una settimana, il ferro - troppo lungo e di qualità scadente - è uscito dalla spalla, provocandole un dolore insopportabile. Irene l’ha subito portata dal veterinario, che ha rimosso il ferro con urgenza.

Il veterinario ha confermato che il ferro era troppo lungo per la zampa di Maggy, probabilmente le è stato impiantato un ferro che il veterinario aveva disponibile, senza troppo curarsi fosse della dimensione corretta, dato che Maggy non aveva nessun proprietario che potesse lamentarsi.

Ma la situazione era peggio di quanto temessimo. Nuove lastre hanno mostrato che, oltre alla pessima scelta del materiale, il primo veterinario non aveva nemmeno allineato correttamente le ossa. Un errore che sta costando a Maggy atroci sofferenze e la concreta possibilità che la zampa non possa più essere recuperata.

Bring Portoguese Podencos to Life, non avendo un chirurgo ortopedico di fiducia ha chiesto il nostro aiuto, abbiamo trovato un rifugio amico ed un veterinario ortopedico in Spagna disposto a tentare, se ce ne saranno le possibilità, una difficile chirurgia sulla zampa di Maggy, ormai gravemente compromessa.

Maggy è stata trasferita via terra tramite una staffetta di volontari dal Portogallo a Caceres presso Progetto Animalista per La Vita.

Il chirurgo che l’ha subito visitata ha riscontrato un callo osseo enorme ed ha richiesto una TAC per poter valutare se la zampa è recuperabile, con quale tipo di intervento oppure se l’unica alternativa rimasta a Maggy è l’amputazione.

Abbiamo dato l’ok ad eseguire la TAC e tutti gli esami necessari a fare la migliore valutazione.

Maggy è una cagnolina adorabile, dolce e affettuosa. Vorrebbe solo poter correre e giocare, come ogni giovane cane. Ma il dolore le impedisce anche i movimenti più semplici.

Oggi ha bisogno di nuove cure, un team ortopedico specializzato, terapie e tanto amore.

Ma tutto questo ha un costo, e da soli non possiamo farcela.

Help us restore hope to Maggy, a brave Portuguese Podenca

Maggy is a young Portuguese Podenca found curled up on a blanket, injured and alone, on the side of a road after being hit by a car. Someone had left her a bowl of water, but they had left her there, injured and terrified.

She was immobile, her eyes full of fear and pain.

After a whole day, someone picked her up and took her to a veterinary clinic in Ponte Da Barca, where X-rays revealed a very serious fracture to her left anterior humerus.

The vet decided to operate on her, inserting an iron to try to stabilize the bone.

Unfortunately, what was supposed to be her salvation turned out to be just the beginning of an ordeal. After the operation, Maggy was temporarily entrusted to a foster home. But after a month, unable to keep her any longer, they contacted our partner association Bring Portuguese Podencos to Life.

Luisa, one of the volunteer members, ran to get her and took her to Irene, a wonderful person who always opens the doors of her house to dogs in difficulty. As soon as she arrived, Maggy's conditions immediately appeared worrying.

After just a week, the iron - too long and of poor quality - came out of her shoulder, causing her unbearable pain. Irene immediately took her to the vet, who urgently removed the iron.

The vet confirmed that the iron was too long for Maggy's leg, probably she was implanted with an iron that the vet had available, without worrying too much about whether it was the right size, since Maggy had no owner who could complain.

But the situation was worse than we feared. New x-rays showed that, in addition to the poor choice of material, the first vet had not even aligned the bones correctly. A mistake that is costing Maggy atrocious suffering and the concrete possibility that the leg may never be recovered.

Bring Portuguese Podencos to Life, not having a trusted orthopedic surgeon asked for our help, we found a friendly shelter and an orthopedic vet in Spain willing to attempt, if there are the possibilities, a difficult surgery on Maggy's leg, now seriously compromised.

Maggy was transferred by land via a relay of volunteers from Portugal to Caceres at Progetto Animalista per La Vita.

The surgeon who immediately examined her found a huge callus and requested a CT scan to evaluate whether the leg is recoverable, with what type of surgery or if the only alternative left to Maggy is amputation.

We gave the ok to perform the CT scan and all the tests necessary to make the best evaluation.

Maggy is an adorable, sweet and affectionate dog. She would just like to be able to run and play, like any young dog. But the pain prevents even the simplest movements.

Today she needs new treatments, a specialized orthopedic team, therapies and a lot of love.

But all this comes at a cost, and we can't do it alone.
