The Somerville Winter Farmers Market is working to make healthy, local food more accessible to low-income shoppers in Somerville. Your participation can double the amount of money that SNAP shoppers can use at their local farmers market.
During the 2018-19 season, we were able to match nearly $6,000 for low-income families at our farmers market, enabling greater access to healthy food. Please help us reach that same amount this year.
About the SNAP Match
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program, formerly Food Stamps) recipients use their benefits card to purchase food items at the market. The market matches every dollar up to $10 dollars per customer each week. This means that by using only $10 of their SNAP benefits, participants can receive $20 worth of food.
Why a SNAP Match?
More than 13,000 Somerville residents live below the poverty line. With rising housing costs and federal budget cuts, it has become increasingly difficult for families to be able to afford healthy farmer’s market products. Healthy food should not be a luxury and should be something that every member of our community can access. At the same time, we want to make sure that farmers earn a living wage growing their produce on small, local farms. The market uses the SNAP match to help SNAP dollars go further, supporting both our customers and our farmers.
Our mission is to make the Somerville Winter Farmers Market a place for all members of our community to feel welcome. Thank you for your help in making this possible.
Here is what your donation provides:
$10 = one SNAP match for one family
$40 = SNAP match benefits for one family for one month
$100 = one SNAP match for ten families
$250 = all the SNAP match funds for one Saturday farmer’s market
"Adopt a Saturday"
Donate at the $250 level or above, and you can "adopt the market" for a day. Select a Saturday of your choice, and a sign will be placed at the Manager's table that day recognizing the person or business of your choice.
