Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary cabin upgrades
Donación protegida
Dear Friends and Family,
To those of you that don't know, I am helping as a winter caretaker at a wildlife rehabilitation center this winter in McCall Idaho.
Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates injured wildlife for much of southwestern Idaho, and helps to educate the public and nearby communities on coexisting successfully with wild animals in the area. (Please see their website to learn more.) Snowdon was started in 1981 and operates completely off-grid in a natural forested area. Snowdon serves an important role in the local community, as it provides people hope and the means to help an injured animal return to the wild.
Along with my other duties this winter (caretaking our resident falcon and owl, helping respond to injured wildlife calls, and snow maintenance at the facility), I am trying to help Snowdon upgrade and modernize the intern cabin. The cabin is nice, but is dated, operates solely on propane including the lighting, has no electricity, no internet, and very spotty cell phone service. Being this "off-grid" and rustic is great in some respects, but is also a challenge for most anyone in the modern age. If you can imagine...to turn lights on you have to do it with a bic lighter, it comes from a lantern that casts very poor light and smells like gas. Often requiring the necessity of wearing a headlamp around at night. No electricity or internet means no microwave, coffee maker, no way to check email, watch a movie, or hardly connect with family and friends. To charge your laptop or cell phone you do it using a car battery and small inverter. This lifestyle has been especially challenging for the younger summer interns. Because of this it has made it more and more difficult for the rehab center to find and retain summer interns and winter caretakers that are willing to live such a meager lifestyle with such sparse amenities. Yet, these volunteers and interns are critical to the operation of the wildlife center for care of the animals and facility maintenance.
If you know me, I love making things more practical, functional, clean, green, and aesthetic! Thus, I have taken on the extra duty of helping Snowdon make some modern and useful upgrades to the cabin that can make it more practical and appealing in the year 2021! I hope to help them operate more successfully and sustainably in the future.
Planned upgrades for the cabin include:
* a clean/quiet solar power battery system to power small wattage appliances and electronic devices
* a cell phone booster to provide reliable cell service and "hotspot" wifi capabilities
* battery-operated LED lighting to improve lighting and reduce dependence on costly use of propane
* modernize some aesthetics and interior materials
I am donating my time and some money to do the upgrades but need more financial help to pay for all the materials. If you feel like you could donate in any way to the cause... great or small, it would be most appreciated! And PLEASE forward to anyone else that you think would be willing to help. I am hoping by the contributions of many we could help support Snowdon to keep operating and modernize and improve their off-grid facility.
Thanks for supporting their nonprofit work!
