Snipes Tract Defense Fund
With little concern for the local community, Lower Makefield Township (LMT) has pushed through a plan for an expensive and unnecessary development on the former Snipes Tree Farm on Dolington Road near I-95.
The development will be devoted to fields for organized team sports, many members of which are not LMT residents. Their activities will include nighttime and weekend practices, games and both day and night tournament competition. There is little or no provision for enjoyment of nature in a park setting. Indeed, hundreds of trees will be bulldozed to clear the tract.
The plan includes three full-sized football fields, parking for more than 150 cars, a concession stand and overhead lights on 80 (!) foot tall masts.
If this development is completed as planned, there will be increased and excessive traffic congestion, water runoff problems, noise, and light pollution from the extremely tall lights.
Even worse, the estimated costs approach TWO MILLION DOLLARS, perhaps more with cost overruns. In addition, there will be annual costs for maintenance, trash collection and police presence. LMT is already in debt, our local taxes are rising and our roads and other infrastructure need help. We need to spend OUR tax money much more wisely!
To get LMT to reconsider this excessive and expensive development plan, a group of LMT citizens (T. R. U. S. T.) has appealed the decision to proceed and obtained a court order, temporarily halting construction. But this litigation is VERY expensive, so we are asking other concerned citizens for contributions to continue the defense, have the development reconsidered and, as a result, have a park that we can ALL enjoy!
Since LMT has budgeted $40,000 for Snipes Tract litigation, we have a goal of $20,000 for defense during this litigation, which we expect in the very near future. We would be grateful for donations in ANY amount, but $100 or more would be fantastic!
In the end, we hope to have a lovely park, a place of peace and beauty, that we can ALL use and be proud of!
