For those of you that don't know the story of Sio and how we are lucky enough to have him be a part of our family please read on below. For those of you that do please donate and help us to help his family and other children in out of home care and their families.
This year 2019 we are raising money to complete the solar power project and refrigeration, new toilets, care packs and school packs for foster kids here in Australia especially our indigenous kids and kids in remote villages in Fiji by running in the SMH half marathon. We are training together as a community and family and need your support to get us over the line!
Sio was born in Fiji on the 1st January 2004. He came to Australia when he was just over one with his father Brock. His family are from Nalauwaki Village on Waya Island. Mere (Sios mother) along with Sios two younger siblings live on an island in the Yasawas a five hour boat ride from the mainland.
We started spending a lot of time with Sio when he was 6 years old. We would take him for sleep overs and weekends away camping or holidays up and down the coast and taught his to swim.
When he was 8 his father Brock was unwell with clots and was unable to care fully for Sio, so Sio came to live with us full time and has been with us ever since.
He learnt to swim in Nan and Pops pool and the Bogey Hole at Bronte just as his brothers and sister did, and now surfs and competes in MSA and Bronte Boardriders.
He also has a passion for Rugby. He watched every game with his dad and hopes to play professional one day.... we are just waiting for his Fijian blood to kick in whether he will play for Fiji or Australia I don't know?.
In 2013 we took Sio back to visit his family. He hadn’t been there since he was 1 and it was an amazing special experience. All the Aunties, Uncles and Grandparents were crying as they didn’t know if they would ever see him again. We were loved bombed we all cried when leaving even my mum and dad.
In June 2015 we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to live with Sios mum and family for a month and spend another month visiting more of Sios family who live in a settlement on the mainland. They don't have much and work so hard, but welcomed us with open arms and put on a big dinner for us (see pictures).
A few months later in October 2015 Sios father died in an accident. Sios father Dominic Brokenshire known as "Brock" was an old Bronte Boardrider and a life long friend of my grandfather Bill Moyes.
In November 2017 we raised $3000 for Kari to help indigenous foster kids.
In December 2017 we managed to raise over $4000 which bought school supplies new kitchen equipment also. He does have a older sister Josie who also lives in Australia and they spend time together when possible.
In May 2018 we had a team of 23 runners compete in the Sydney half marathon and reached our target to raise $10000 for solar power batteries and refrigeration/ freezer.
This year we are hoping for 50 runners in the half marathon, we are hoping to raise a further $10000 which will enable us to complete the solar project for the families in Nalauwaki village, refrigeration and a new toilet.
