Growing up I always had to watch my friends and my brothers play sports...specifically the sport I love the most...soccer! I would watch them, stay up till 5am watching the Euros, Premier League, World Cup or any game that I could find. However, because of the competiveness, speed and well...not being able to walk I could never play...UNTIL NOW!!!! While looking for a van I saw a team poster of a wheelchair soccer team and yelled ''WAIT!!! WHATS THAT?!?! I WANT TO PLAY!!!'' The next day I went to Ability360 to watch a practice and IMMEDIATELY knew that I wanted in!! A few weeks after that I did an assessment test and was asked to join the ASU Sun Devil Power Soccer team and we're currently ranked #2 in the Nation and heading to Ft. Wayne, IN to bring the championship back to AZ! Best decision EVER!!! However, I didn't have a chair to use. Out of the kindness of their hearts the coach and his son let me borrow his sons old chair, its really not customized for me and needs repairs, but I make it work and am really grateful to them for giving me the chance to even play.
In this sport you need a specific type of chair to be competetive. You can't use your eveyday chair due to the amount of contact thats involved in playing and when you break your primary chair...well...you're in trouble. To be competetive I need the right equipment and the chair that every top player in the world uses is the StrikeForce Power Soccer Chair. They can cost anywhere between $9-$12K depending on how much customizing you need to make it fit you. Unfortunately, insurance...like always...will NOT help me out with the costs and the chair to be customized for me will be $7,700 which with a fiancee and 3 kids and being on Disability I can't really afford that. HOWEVER, I applied for a grant from the Challenged Athletes Foundation and received $1000 and with the help of that and you guys I can make my dream come true! A $5 donation would help me get closer and closer. If I'm being honest, I want to be the best, I want to represent the USA in the World Cup(yes, there is a World Cup for Power Soccer) or in the Paralympics or wherever!!! But I need the StrikeForce to help me get there!!!
Thank you for anything you can spare, and if you can't no hard feelings at all...maybe you could share this and that'd really help me spread the word!
Power Soccer is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users. These participants include persons with quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, head trauma, stroke, spinal cord injury and other disabilities.
Power Soccer combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself, to participate in an extremely challenging game similar to soccer. The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court. Two teams of four power wheelchair users attack, defend, and spin-kick a 13-inch soccer ball in an attempt to score goals.
