Shop with a Cop  - 2018

Each year the Livermore Police Department (LPD) teams up with the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) to put on the annual Shop With A Cop program.  The Shop With A Cop program allows LPD officers to "adopt" a young LVJUSD student who is in financial need, and to take the student shopping for Christmas presents in early December.  Donated funds are used to allow each student the opportunity to buy presents for their family members and themselves, helping to ensure a brighter Christmas for the student and his or her family. Staff within LVJUSD identify students in need and nominate them to take part in the program.

The Shop With A Cop program takes place on a Saturday morning in early December.  The selected students are picked up at their homes by a Livermore Police Officer in uniform (all of the involved officers are donating their personal time to the program).  The officers drive the students to a local Starbucks where they are treated to a cup of hot cocoa.  Then all the officers and students caravan to Wal-Mart where they are greeted by the Granada High School band, cheerleaders, and members of the leadership team.  The students then go on a shopping spree at Wal-Mart selecting gifts for their family members and themselves.  Students often have to be encouraged to buy something for themselves as they typically are buying sensible gifts for their family members such as clothing, shoes, and bedding.  Once the shopping is completed, the students are taken to Livermore High School where they get to enjoy breakfast made by police officers and LPD volunteers.  After breakfast, the students are assisted by their officers and other volunteers in wrapping their presents before being taken back home.

The Shop With A Cop program is such a rewarding experience for everyone involved that LPD officers look forward to it each year.   Most end up opening their wallets to allow their "adopted" students to buy more items for themselves and their family.   Wal-Mart, Starbucks, and Emil Villa Restaurant have been supporters of the program since its inception.

LPD and LVJUSD are asking the community to help raise funds for the program with an overall goal of raising $10,000 which will allow us to “adopt” more than thirty Livermore students in need to participate.  Your donation is greatly appreciated and will go directly to the program and the students.  If you have any questions about the program, you can contact Lieutenant John Hurd at [phone redacted].
