Shannon Lia Roberts, 56, passed away on January 17, 2021 from a glioblastoma brain tumor. She battled this tumor courageously for over 3 years but could not overcome the odds against her.
However, Shannon's full story includes battling multiple brain tumors over 28+ years. First diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma in 1992, she endured surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy for several years.
Despite a prognosis of just 2-3 years to live, she was in remission for over 20 years. In that time, she had two miracle children against the odds and lived a wonderful life.
Cruelly, a brain tumor appeared again in 2017 and this time it was a glioblastoma. Another death sentence. She once again endured radiation, chemotherapy and surgery to try and beat it. But glioblastomas usually win and she left us far too early.
Shannon embodied positivity, grit, grace, and determination. Her smile lit up the room. She was taken from us far too early. Shannon was the best of all of us and we miss her dearly.
Sadly, brain cancer research trails most other types of cancer research in terms of funding and progress. As a result, the treatments Shannon underwent in the early nineties and again 25 years later were essentially the same and brutal. Radiation frying good and bad cells in the brain. Chemotherapy poisoning her body. And craniotomies cutting out chunks of her brain.
We've seen the progress that focus, dedication, funding and determination can make in other cancer efforts. Immunotherapy remains a promising area of research but it isn't there yet for brain cancer.
All proceeds from this gofundme will be donated to MD Anderson in Shannon's name for the purposes of brain cancer research. The family will match all funds raised. Thanks for supporting Shannon and this vital cause. No one should have to go through what she endured, not once, but multiple times over several decades.
Note - for anyone that already donated to the Shannon Roberts Memorial Fund via the Aggieland Credit Union information in the attached link or to MD Anderson directly, those funds will be combined with this gofundme and matched as well.
Thank you,
Wayne, Jack, Katy and Maggie Roberts
