*DISCLAIMER: When we first started this initiative, we were not making PPE - nor was it our end goal. We do not have a 3-D printer, nor the resources. We started this initiative as we are in a pandemic and crisis situation. We aim to provide these masks not only to hospitals but also other heath care facilities in need of them.*
My name is Kruti Sanghavi and I am a local pediatric dentist. Sew Strong Project started as a small initiative by me sewing masks at home. Later, my husband (Nilay Shah) and I, reached out to our childhood friend and local fabric business owner (Shashank Gupta) and we decided to partner together. With his resources and tailors, we were able to create a generic one hundred percent cotton mask. After contacting a few hospitals and urgent cares, we were encouraged to pursue this project further. Hence, we decided to start a GoFundMe page and within forty-eight hours it exploded to getting funding for $2000.
We have a whole community in Central Jersey ready and willing to help/ donate. The money raised is going strictly to the tailors that have worked tirelessly to produce as many masks as possible. We just need your input, advice and acceptance.
FAQs:
1.) What is the mask made of? The mask itself is a two layer 100% cotton, bleachable fabric without elastics or wire. Masks need to be breathable and bleachable. There is a slit in the middle for filter material if needed ( i.e. air filters, coffee filters, Halyard surgical fabric, etc.).
2.) Does the mask filter corona virus? Again, we are in a pandemic and due to limited supply of resources, hence we started making these. So with a filter, it may. However, without the filter, it does not. Again, this is not PPE. Most healthcare workers (from what the facilities have said) are wearing these over their PPE to preserve the PPE longer. Also, these are given to other patients in the hospital, since there is a shortage of masks.
3.) What are you dong to sterilize these? We are not experts in infection control. However, using WHO and CDC guidelines (along with other resources) we have come up with the following protocol attached. Please note, these are not sterile as we do not have access to autoclaves and/or any other materials to sterilize. However, these are sanitary.
