Hello! My name is Michael Gonzalez. I recently returned from 6 months volunteering in the Philippines after the island of Leyte was devastated this past November by the strongest typhoon in recorded human history, Typhoon Haiyan, aslo known as Yolanda. Over 500,000 homes were completely destroyed, & over 4,000 people lost their lives. While in the Philippines with All Hands Volunteers we deconstructed over 500 hazardous buildings, constructed over 200 new homes, and several
school buildings. Although All Hands Volunteers and other organizations such as the International Organization of Migration, and Habitat for Humanity have put a roof over the heads of many displaced families, typhoon Haiyan did not only take their homes, and all of their belongings, but it also took their livelihoods.Their last Christmas wasn't spent
buying gifts, it was spent rationing food, fighting to survive, and still a year later, the majority of these families are still fighting, with hunger, with grief, and with the challenge of finding a new way to support their families in this scared region. That's why my goal on Christmas day, together with All Hands Volunteers and several members of the International Organization of Migration, is to give a free toy to over 3,000 children living in these regions, and feed over 5,000 individuals a true Christmas meal!
But we cant do this on our own, due to the length of time since impact and less and less people being informed of the very real needs of the Filipino people, funding has decreased extensively. But today, you could make a difference, with a donation of just $5.00 you can gift one child living in this region a toy on Christmas day, with $10.00 you can also feed them, and with $15.00 you could feed them and a loving parent. Lets remind them that we haven't forgotten about them, and
that we haven't forgotten about the true spirit of Christmas, the spirit of giving. Together lets send Santa to the island of Leyte!
