Self-Defense for the Asian Community in Bay Area

Donation protected
There has been a rampant uptick of disgusting, senseless violence against the Asian American community ever since the COVID pandemic started. Video after video, we are seeing our elders getting attacked, beaten, slashed, robbed, and murdered in their own neighborhoods and the daily streets they walk on.

84-year old Thai elder Vicha Ratanapakdee was violently attacked in SF on January 28, 2021, and died two days later.

61-year-old Filipino man Noel Quintana's face was randomly slashed on a train in Manhattan on February 3, 2021.

75-year-old Chinese elder Pak Ho was robbed and assaulted in Oakland on March 9, 2021, and left brain dead two days later.

84-year-old Korean Nancy Toh was knocked unconscious in Westchester County, NY on March 9, 2021.

76-year-old Xiao Zhen Xie was punched in the face on Market St in SF on March 17, 2021. She fought back by grabbing a stick she found and hitting the male perpetrator with it.

These attacks mentioned are unfortunately only a drop in the bucket of what the Asian American community has experienced in the past year alone. We are seeing the violence happening EVERY day in the media.  Moreover, the reality is that we are only seeing the ones that have been reported--many are not reporting the attacks out of fear that making them public would encourage perpetrators to ride some type of sick trend of taking advantage of our vulnerable elders. WHEN WILL IT END?!

We cannot bear to watch another video of our beloved Asian elders getting violently attacked. Many of our elders feel helpless and are afraid to leave their homes. Nobody should fear their life when walking in the public, especially our most vulnerable populations. Please consider donating so that we can provide self-defense tools and safety education to the community.

The funds will be allocated to compensating trained defense instructors to hold community trainings in Oakland and surrounding Bay Area cities that are safe for the elderly and families to raise awareness and build solidarity.

We are in ongoing discussions to work in collaboration with community organizations and other organizers doing similar work, and we plan to update this page with partnerships and 100% transparency on the allocation of donated funds.

We are working with the following groups to donate to and organize self-defense events with in the Bay Area:

AACI (Asian American for Community Involvement) - San Jose, CA
International Boxing institute (Coach Bilal) - Oakland, CA
Filhos de Bimba Escola de Capoeira (Profesor Ricky "Malandro" Lawson) - Oakland/Emeryville, CA

Our intention is to make self-defense accessible to vulnerable communities so they can stay vigilant, be prepared, and feel safe. We are deeply grateful for your financial support.
