Search and Recovery Rescue Boat

Donation protected
Benton County Fire District  2 is a small combination fire district primarily made up of volunteer’s firefighters, EMT’s and Paramedic’s.

The Fire District covers an area of 88 square miles of fire protection land and 131 square miles of ambulance protection land. Our year around population is 10,000 residents, which inflate significantly in the spring, summer and fall months, primarily from visitors to our wine industry and our outdoor recreational activities on the river, hills and agriculture industry. We are a full service fire department responding to any fire, rescue, and medical and special response service. Our typical annual emergency responses are about 1,000 calls per year.

The Yakima River runs through our entire fire district. Currently, there is no rescue boat to respond to water emergencies other than a Dive Team from the Tri Cities which specializes in underwater recoveries. That Dive Team responds with a raft that is not set up for the shallow waters typically found eight months out of the year. Moreover, there is no surface rescue system in the fire district, and we had not taken this on as a service level until last year. We sent six of our employees out and had them trained and certified in Rescue SRT 1 swimmers with swift water certifications, as a first step in bringing this new service to our fire district.  We have plans of expanding to eight people next year. We also serve mutual aid to other neighboring fire districts that have no capable shallow water boat service.

We have a very small budget, and all the funds are dedicated to current services, which leaves us little room to purchase a rescue boat.  Our district is located in the middle of two dams; therefore, we have to trailer the current rescue raft to either side of the dam, or navigate frequent but common shallow waters. We have saved a little money to help aid in our river rescue budget in hopes to buy a good boat, but it’s a struggle.

Most of our personnel are Volunteers with only six career and nine live-in Resident firefighters.  We run two ALS ambulances, and are a full fire and rescue fire department with 53 total personnel. We are located on the outskirts of a large community called the Tri-Cities. Our small community has given so much, with a low social economic value. They truly are amazing, but are taxed to the full amount allowed by law. So, we are looking to modern social media to help meet the service needs of our community, and those that come to visit, by asking social media to assist us in servicing our residents, and the many people who frequent our popular river.

We need a Wooldridge XP boat or similar, because of the thick hull and an open bow. They are reliable and built to withstand hitting rocks occasionally. The outboard jet motor is necessary because of the ability to trim up, and the Wooldridge has the best tunnel for shallow water, as the hull design protects the jet prop. The cost of this boat and related equipment is $50,000-$60,000.

Our response area annually has thousands of raft floaters, bass fisherman, and people in canoes on the river.  Just any power boat is struggle, and are rarely seen because of the shallow water during the spring, summer and fall seasons.  That is why this specific custom-made boat would be a resource for us year round, even when we see frequent spring and winter flooding.

Please consider donating and sharing our link with everyone.  With your help, we would be able to meet our goal, and have the rescue boat we need on order and here in time before the 2019 summer season starts.

We have several opportunities for donations.

For those who can give a little, we understand that adds up to be a lot. If 10,000 people were to donate the price of a latte, we would meet our goal. As you can see, we really need your help to make sure this fundraiser is seen and gets the necessary attention in order to reach as many people who would be willing to forgo a latte for just one day.

We have also created a few other donation levels we call sponsorship levels.  Those are for the people who can give more, or for businesses that are able to donate large sums of money, and can do so in time for the end-of-year tax write-off.  Below is a list of our other options to support this cause. These options are in order from highest to the lowest donation level.

Donations of any size

Many people understand that donations of any amount are greatly appreciated, and the very reason why many things are made possible.  It is much easier to acquire needed funds when many people give a little.  We understand it is not common place for people to have access to thousands of dollars. It is the masses, which give what they can, that make many things possible in fire department fundraisers nationwide.

This would not be possible without people like you.

To all those that help make this possible, with a donation of $5 or more, your name will be listed on the fire district website and mentioned at the annual Firefighters’ Appreciation Banquet the year the rescue boat is launched, thanking you for your help in providing necessary rescue equipment.
