Residents have discovered that, Serco intend to place a Diversionary Program for up
To 70 adult males up to the age of 26 who are on bail in the local Aboriginal culture centre the community are vehemently against this proposal.
Yarrawarra Cultural Centre has been part of Corindi Beach community since the 1980's and has played a vital contribution in cultural awareness for both local and travelling school groups, community organisations, and the local Gumbaynggirr people. Finding out that these services and programs will cease, and that up to 70 adult males will be housed there, has shocked the community.
The community has rallied to fight what will destroy not only the Cultural Centre's purpose which the Elders worked hard to bring to fruition, but will also have a detrimental security impact on the broader community. Yarrawarra is located a short walk (less than 300m) from the local primary school with over 200 students ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old. Serco's plan to place 18-26 year old male offenders on bail within this environment has left parents of the school students extremely concerned and fearful for the safety of their children.
The community are calling for the termination of any further progress with this project as the site is completely and utterly unsuitable for this purposes use.
Coffs Harbour councillors Swan and Arkan along with Gurmesh Singh state member, Kevin Hogan Federal member and David Shoebridge greens MP have pledged support for the community.
