Build a birth centre to save mums & babies lives

Donation protected
We are raising money to support the lives and safety of women in The Gambia. Babies and mothers are losing their lives during childbirth as a result of not having the right birth professional present during their birth and no hospital in close proximity.

I created The Birthing Safe Project (BSP) which is a life-changing project after being in the Gambia heavily pregnant after 2 gruesome caesarean sections that nearly took my life. I was in the early stages of labor with no midwife or hospital nearby.  I called the hospital which was not close by and they were full to capacity and the local village midwife who is not medically trained to deal with any type of medical emergencies such as a uterine rupture or even a fetal distressed baby.

This is when reality hit me. As a birth professional, I started to feel scared beyond belief because I know if a mother doesn't receive the right care during labor, especially during an emergency, it could be a catastrophy.

I managed to get in contact with another hospital which was further away and they warned me of the village midwives and that many women die trying to give birth and so do their babies. They also told me of the sweet homebirths many mothers who are not high risk have but for a mother who has had a previous caesarean section, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes or the likes it would be a must to have a trained birth professional present.

We have taken up a big challenge to build a birthing centre in the rural village of Aslym which is in the centre of many villages.

That would mean all 3 villages would have access to the birthing centre to birth their babies safely and if a complication should arise, we would have the right facilities and professionals to support and save the mothers and babies lives.

When a mother goes into labor, a traditional midwife would attend her birth but if she has no money, the mother would be left to birth her baby on her own, even through a difficult labor.

As my labor slowed down and gradually stopped due to my fear, I started to speak to the local indigenous Gambian women who started telling me stories of the many women who didn't make it through labor.

These birthing women have to walk for miles and miles during the hard contractions through bushes, forests, rivers, in the dark with no lights sometimes, to get to the main road where they would flag down a stranger to hike a lift to the hospital which is quite far away.

This is not only unsafe for the vulnerable mother, but it puts her and her baby at great risk of being violated and abused by the person who collects her, Subhanallah.

The main cause of death to the mother and baby tends to be a lack of appropriate care, facilities and support.

In the Gambia, a mother has a 1 in 24-lifetime risk of dying during childbirth and only 57% of births are conducted by a skilled midwife or birth team quoted in the BMC. Saffie Colley et al

Levels of maternal mortality in the Gambia are unacceptably high and are ranked among the highest in Africa. NCBI

These amazing mothers and babies are dying from haemorrhage, sepsis, Anaemia, Gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, uterine ruptures ETC.

These are things that can be caught early and managed before they become life-threatening, but the right professionals would need to be aware of these conditions so they can be actively managed.

No mother deserves to die and no baby deserves to die so we are calling for your help and support to help us save lives of those most vulnerable and in need.

Another major problem is there is no ambulance service in the villages so we want to either buy an Ambulance and send it over or hopefully have one donated to us to transport the labouring mum safely to and from the centre.

OUR GOALS
``````````````````````
We want to raise enough money to build a birth centre to give women back their rights and provide them with a safe space to birth their babies.
The birth centre would be the home to three surgery theatres if a  mother needed a caesarean section, 2 labor wards for high risk and non-high-risk women.
The birth centre would also have a centre for education so
We want to provide a space for birth professionals to come to the Gambia to support the birthing mothers and their beautiful babies.
We want to provide an ambulance service to the villages so they and their babies can be safe.
Our goal is to build a birth centre that will cater to the surrounding villages which house over 5000 women.
We want to create a space whereby birth workers from all around the world can come to the Gambia, stay at the birth centre to offer their skills and expertise to these mothers for a 3 to 6 month period.
We also want to build a place for birth professionals to come over and educate the Gambian traditional midwives so we can build a safe birthing culture.
We desperately need your help to raise this money so we can save the mothers and babies lives, inshaallah.
Sadaqah (Charity) is always a blessing so let's do this and raise what we need to get started.
As the birth centre Is being built we will provide live video updates, and once it is built we will put a plaque at the entrance of the birth centre with all the donators names.
This is a really important task for us here and we hope that we can raise the money to get this project moving as soon as possible.
No more mothers and babies need to die...
Please share with your friends, on WhatsApp, social media and all of your family. We need to make positive changes inshaallah.
