Please help us, PSCORE, to rescue North Korean refugees in China!
For refugees fleeing hunger and persecution in North Korea, getting out of the country is only the first step. Once they make it to China, they are considered illegal immigrants. Chinese policy is to arrest them and take them back to North Korea where they face imprisonment or even death. To date, PSCORE has helped 10 North Korean defectors arrive safely in South Korea.
Thanks to funds provided by international donors, PSCORE recently helped a young North Korean woman, Ji-Eun, make it safely from China to South Korea. After crossing the DPRK/Chinese border in winter, Ji-Eun was stranded in China with severe frostbite on her feet. She was in urgent need of medical attention, and was not able to continue her journey. PSCORE provided her with funds to treat these severe medical conditions while she was in China, and then brought her safely to South Korea. By now she has fully recovered and is enjoying her new life in Seoul.
PSCORE responds to individual cases like Ji-Eun’s. These cases are more costly than other cases and require a quick response. In Ji-Eun’s case the medical expenses alone were $20,000. To be able to offer continued support to North Koreans hiding in China, PSCORE heavily relies on donations to our Safe Passage Fund.
No donation is too small. We are immensely grateful for all contributions! Every single dollar counts!
All money collected for this Fund is used to get North Koreans safely out of China to South Korea. To respond to help requests we are aiming for 10,000 USD.

The following letter is from one of our past donors, Eric, whose generous donation helped Ji-Eun make it to Seoul.
"When I heard that a young woman had escaped from North Korea and was stuck in China, I knew right away that I wanted to do what I could to help her. I had heard how dangerous China could be for North Korean escapees and, imagining that, thought it would be well worth it if my contribution could help just one person navigate those dangers and make it to South Korea safely. Truly helping another individual is not a chance one has often in life and, even though I only gave a little money, it felt good knowing that I was doing something.
When I heard that that escapee, whose name I learned was Ji Eun, had made it to South Korea safely, I was overjoyed. I knew that the course of her life had been forever changed, and it was exciting to imagine the new possibilities--for education, work, and freedom--that lay before her. It was even more exciting to meet Ji Eun in person, see the appreciation in her face, and hear her story. Her journey through China was very difficult, and without PSCORE's help, she would probably be back in North Korea today. Thinking about this and knowing Ji Eun as a person now, I am so thankful for PSCORE's efforts and so glad that I gave the little bit I could to help. PSCORE was established in 2006 and is run almost exclusively by volunteers. With a special consultative status to the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), PSCORE is active in human rights advocacy work and hosts weekly education programs for North Korean defectors.

북한 탈북자들에게는 북한을 빠져 나오는 것이 첫 걸음에 불과합니다. 30만명 이상의 북한사람들은 아직 중국에서 불법으로 체류 중 입니다. 불법체류 신분이기에 중국 경찰들에게 잡히면 북한으로 다시 돌려보내지고 투옥되거나 심하게는 사형까지 받게 됩니다. 지금까지 성통만사(성공적인 통일을 만들어가는 사람들)는 10명의 탈북자들은 대한민국으로 안전하게 올 수 있도록 도와주었습니다.
성통만사는 저번 2013년 탈북기부금으로 탈북여성 지은이가 중국에서 한국으로 안전하게 올 수 있게 도와주었습니다. 지은이가 북한을 탈출 할 때 신발을 잃어버려 동상에 걸렸습니다. 지은이는 혼자서 아무데도 갈 수 없었고 급하게 의료지원이 필요했습니다. 성통만사에서 기부금으로 지은이를 중국에서 치료할 수 있게 도와주었고 한국으로 안전하게 대리고 왔습니다. 지금 일년이 지나서 지은이는 완쾌되었고 서울에서 새로운 삶을 즐겁게 잘 지내고 있습니다.
성통만사는 지은이 같은 처지에 있는 탈북자들을 도와줍니다. 이번과 같은 케이스는 돈이 더 들고 빠른 조치가 필요합니다. 지은이 같은 경우 의료비가 2천만원이 들었습니다. 계속 중국에서 숨어지내는 탈북자들을 도우려면 탈북기부금이 절실합니다.
탈북기부금은 탈북자들이 한국으로 올 수 있도록 돕기 위해 만들어졌습니다. 하지만 성통만사는 거기서 멈추지 않습니다.
2007년부터 성통만사는 500명 넘는 탈북자들을 자원봉사자와 인턴들과 함께 꾸준히 지원해 왔습니다. 주로 교육, 진료비, 심리상담으로 많은 탈북자들이 한국에서 적응 할 수 있게 도와주고 있습니다. 성통만사가 그 들의 삶에 보탬이 될 수 있도록 많은 지원과 기부가 필요합니다.
에릭은 전에 우리 모금행사에 기부를 한적이 있습니다. 그리고 우리에게 편지를 보냈습니다. 우리는 이 편지를 당신에게 보여주고 싶습니다.
“한 탈북여성이 중국에 갇혀있다는 말을 듣자마자 저는 그 분을 도와주고 싶었습니다. 저는 중국이 탈북자들에게 얼마나 위험한 곳인지 들은 적이 있었고 저의 기부가 그 분이 대한민국으로 안전하게 오게 도울 수 있다면 뜻 깊은 일이라고 생각했습니다. 비록 많지 않은 돈이 지만 저는 좋은 일을 해서 뿌듯했습니다.

사단법인 ‘성공적인통일을만들어가는사람들’은 북한의 인권개선과 한반도의 평화적 통일을 염원하는 회원들(남한, 북한, 외국 출신)이 함께하는 비정부·비정파적인 시민단체입니다. 우리는 700여명의 국내외 자원봉사자들과 북한인권 활동, 탈북청소년 교육지원, 한반도 통일준비 등의 사업들을 전개해 나가고 있습니다. 유엔 경제 사회 이사회로부터 특별 협의 지위 얻은 인권단체 및 통일부허가 사단법인 (비영리법인) ‘성통만사’는 기획재정부가 지정하는 공익성기부금 대상단체입니다.
