We are campaigning to save the former Intermediate School for Girls' in Cowbridge.
This was the first school built specifically for the intermediate education of girls in Wales (and England). It is a national historic asset and an important part of Cowbridge's character. It represents a pivotal moment in Welsh history about which we should be proud.
Full details of our campaign can be found here: www.oldgirlsschool.wales
A planning application has been submitted to demolish the school in its entirety and we are seeking help to fund our campaign against this.
The school was listed as one of the Top 10 endangered buildings by the Victorian Society in 2019 and you can read more about this here:
However, despite the treasured status of the school and the overwhelming community-wide objection to its demolition and redevelopment, Hafod Housing Association have now formally resubmitted plans to completely demolish the school for the purpose of building 34 housing units.
This is in contravention of their own professed core values of "Respect" and "Working Together" in so far as they have ignored our in-person requests and the massive response to our petition and have decided instead to move forward with the destruction of our heritage.
Why do we need to raise funds for the campaign?
Your donations will play a vital role in providing support for community efforts including promotion of our campaign, advice from heritage experts and other professionals whose expertise we will required in order to take our existing campaign to the next level.
Our ultimate goal, in addition to saving our Victorian treasure, is to ensure the ongoing respect for and preservation of our heritage, and to stop destruction of our town's character. Allowing the erasure of our history is a dangerous precedent to set, and we do not want it set in Cowbridge.
