Art is the one language that transcends political and civil divisions. It is the one expression that brings hope and joy to those struggling through a pandemic. It is the one language that can unite communities, Rural and Urban. We ask you to join our efforts to preserve our rural art mission, The Green Drake Gallery and Community Center. The Green Drake is located in Millheim Pa, which is nestled in the Central Pennsylvania Mountains in a community known as Penns Valley. This is an area where there are few cultural exchange facilities to be found.
Since its founding ten years ago the Green Drake has housed environmental presentations, meetings of the local Conservation Associations, open mics, and poetry readings. We sponsor art shows, concerts as well as music and art classes for children and adults alike. We also have a number of artists in residence in studio spaces on the upper floor.
As for the art, there are the wonderful works of accomplished local artists and craftspeople. The Green Drake is a treasure trove of amazing paintings, many depicting the beauty of nature in this area. There is also breathtakingly beautiful photography, jewelry, pottery, wood crafts, T-shirts, postcards, greeting cards, books and the list goes on. We have started to set up a mini library, too.
The goal of this profile is to keep this local gem afloat during these difficult times. We have managed to keep going as long as possible but COVID gave a crippling blow to the business. As the year draws to a close our artistic director is leaving and our resources have dried up. We now need to reorganize and fund a transition to a new operating structure . Our goal is to raise $10,000 that will be used to pay expenses and help us to pay for a part time manager to help with the restructuring and operations. We will also invest the funds into the facility and programs to make us even more inclusive to the Local Community.
We are living in difficult times. Every penny could go to so many places… The Arts may not be on the top priority list... We know. But, if there is anything worth saving in this impersonal and profit oriented world, that is the spirit of the Homo Ludens: man, the player. What really makes us human is our drive to create things beyond the practicalities of survival. Only we, Human Beings are capable of capturing the beauty around us… only we can tell stories to preserve the memory of our ancestors by the power of art. If you have ever admired a painting or photograph, if you have a favourite vase at home, if you have ever read a book, watched a movie, or listened to music: YOU ENJOYED THE WORK OF ARTISTS. Art also has a very important economic role: by attracting visitors and tourists, it generates business for other small businesses that are struggling to survive today.
In times of hardship, when we need to rely on each other even more than in times of abundance, it is even more important to save our culture (Rural and Urban) without which the fabric of our local communities will crumble and our National Identity will fade away. Without the generosity and faith of Art Patrons across human history the world would not have most of the wonderful art we enjoy all over the globe today.
For years, artists and friends of the Gallery have invested a lot of money and selfless volunteer time. We have faith that with the help of other generous art lovers we can Keep the Green Drake Alive and Make it Thrive. We are grateful beyond words for every single penny you can give.
