Urgent need in Ouanaminthe, Haiti.
UJANE (English: Youth for the Advancement of the North East) is a Haitian youth organization the goal of which is to work towards positive changes in the behavior of young people by involving them in charitable work and community service. In April 2016, UJANE spent $3,063.00 (USD) to construct a farm devoted to crop farming and raising livestock for sale in the community. In 2018, some members of UJANE heard via radio of an urgent and immediate humanitarian matter in their community:
In Ouanaminthe, Haiti, many elderly citizens are abandoned by their families and forced into homelessness and panhandling due to a lack of access to the bare necessities of life. These elderly individuals are often attacked in the streets.
After reaching out to the families of the elderly folks in question (to no avail) and consulting with a number of retirement homes and elderly shelters, UJANE was able to house twenty of these senior citizens in a shelter called Bon Samaritain (Good Samaritan) Elderly Home. Since then, UJANE and Bon Samaritain have been working to make ends meet, using their own funds from a farm they had built and the funds of kind benefactors for the purchase of rice, beans, oil, adult diapers, and detergent for the residents of Bon Samaritain.
We are seeking sustainable funding, but it can't come soon enough.
UJANE's benefactors, like many of us, have had to reevaluate their spending due to the pandemic, and therefore have withdrawn funding. In addition, the UJANE farm whose profits have been used to fund the purchase of food for the elderly home, was plagued by an outbreak of a virus that killed all of UJANE's livestock. UJANE's own members have been offering their paychecks to pay for the bare necessities required by the elderly residents of Bon Samaritain. The workers simply cannot sustain this, and they are quite literally living paycheck to paycheck.
Who am I?
I am a senior in college who was asked to be UJANE's English-speaking correspondent to expand the reach of UJANE's fundraising efforts. Until now, I have been submitting grant proposals and hoping to receive large-scale, sustainable funding for the organization. I am hopeful that donor organizations will respond in time, but we cannot wait for that response. This is our last resort to keep the Bon Samaritain Elderly Home running until we can secure that sustainable funding.
Where will the money go?
One month's worth of food for the 35 residents of Bon Samaritain (the basics: rice, flour, oil, canned goods) costs the home approximately $1000. We are hoping, as a basic goal, to make it until the end of the year.
In the long term, our massive reach goal is $40,000. This money would help UJANE restore its farm's livestock, enabling them to once again have a sustainable means of funding the Bon Samaritain Elderly Home. They just need the funding to make that a reality.
