Please help us save South Utica’s neighborhoods from the Kelberman Center’s giant, incompatible building and the dangerous precedent it sets for future development in the city.
While we fully support their mission and goal to build an inclusive community, Kelberman’s “Link at Sunset” apartment building is simply too big for our historic neighborhood of one and two family homes. The proposed building is a 4 story, 60 unit building with office space on the ground floor and almost 100 parking spots on a tiny 1.6 acre lot.
Regardless of what our critics say, we are not upset about the KIND of people - it is the NUMBER of people. We also object to the building’s impact on our aging and overburdened infrastructure, the seriously flawed process in City Hall, and not having ANY input at all into a publicly funded project that will substantially change our neighborhood forever. We have suggested the compromise solution of a 30 unit building, as our motto "Build It Smaller" clearly says.
Regrettably, these efforts seem to have failed and we are now in the unfortunate position of having to sue the city that we live in and love. No one wanted it to come to this, but here we are. Our lawyers believe that City Hall illegally issued a building permit to Kelberman without the required approvals. The only way to challenge and reverse that action is to file a very expensive Article 78 lawsuit.
We have raised about one-third of the $30,000 price tag already, but we need your help to pay for the rest. This effort is 100% grassroots and self-funded. No staff, no phones, no office.
