Save the Schenley Park Columbus Statue

Basil M. Russo, President of Italian Sons and Daughters of America — and the ISDA legal team, led by attorney George Bochetto — secured a temporary injunction in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas that will block Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto from removing the Christopher Columbus statue in Schenley Park.
The Italian American community saved for decades to collect the $65,000 needed to build the 50-foot bronze and marble Columbus monument, and it is ISDA’s goal to secure a permanent ruling that would put a halt to the city's removal plan.
In order to win this long-term court battle, we need your help in setting a legal precedent that will deter public officials in other U.S. cities from unjustly uprooting any more of these historical statues.
The time-honored Columbus Day parades and statues rose up in the late 1800s as Italian immigrants attempted to create a sense of self-esteem and dignity during a period where they were subjected to lynchings, bigotry and prejudice throughout the country.
These statues and monuments symbolize unity, they stand for anti-discrimination, and they're a reminder of what our ancestors went through to overcome the hate and oppression that other minority groups are subjected to today.
Let's keep fighting and keep educating the public on the real meaning and purpose of our historic Columbus celebrations.
