Save the Oak Park Farmers Market!
The Oak Park Farmers Market was formed in 2010 to fill a need in one of Sacramento’s food deserts. A community survey conducted at the time revealed that residents couldn’t easily access fresh, healthy produce. In response, the Oak Park Farmers Market was created.
Last year, the market faced a temporary setback as its nonprofit host shifted priorities, opting to close the market. Joany Titherington, the market founder and an Oak Park resident, has never wavered in her commitment to retain this community service. She has tirelessly raised funding to reopen the market through a government grant. However, that funding won’t be available until 2024, leaving this year’s market unfunded.
Help us save the Oak Park Farmers Market!
We need to raise $180,000 to open this May and Joany has already secured most of this.
Donate today, and you will be matching community commitments dollar-for-dollar to help us bring the market back!
Since its opening, the market has served an average of 1,500 visitors per week. The market attracts small farms run by women and people of color, creating the dual benefit of supporting local farmers while feeding a community with an 18% rate of food insecurity.
One-third of sales at the market come from EBT (food stamps), while donations allow the market to match EBT sales dollar-for-dollar up to $20 per customer.
The market must rebuild everything from scratch–except for the intellectual history that Joany brings. She will be returning to the market as Market Manager, and she can’t wait to keep her original dream alive for her community.
"A trip to the market is one of the best ways to connect with your community. We miss the days of conversing with neighbors, trading recipes, and watching the neighborhood kids grow all while purchasing beautiful produce," says Joany, Oak Park Farmer's Market Manager.
