Save KISL 88.7 FM: Keep Community Radio On-Air

We are KISL 88.7 FM, a small but mighty community radio station on Catalina Island. Because of a loss in funding the station is currently off the air.

KISL is the only radio station on Catalina Island and has been the heart and soul of Avalon for over two decades. As a non-profit, community-run radio station, we bring local music, news, emergency alerts, student programming, cultural events, and island voices to the airwaves — free and accessible to all.

But now, KISL is at risk.

Due to rising operational costs, equipment repairs, and reduced funding, our future is uncertain. We need your help to keep the signal live and protect our educational FM license — a public trust and community resource that could be lost forever if we go off-air.

KISL is more than just a radio station — it's a classroom, a stage, a lifeline, and a celebration of island life. As a licensed non-commercial educational FM station, we serve:

Students and educators through media training, internships, and hands-on broadcasting experience

Local musicians and artists by giving them airplay and support

Island residents and visitors with community news, and emergency communications

Catalina’s unique voice, culture, and environment — heard worldwide via our stream and podcasts

Every dollar goes directly to supporting the equipment, outreach, licensing, and operations that allow us to remain an independent, community-driven media outlet.

What We Need

We’re raising $30,000 to:

Replace aging broadcast equipment and improve signal strength

Maintain our FCC educational license and compliance

Support training for student and volunteer DJs

Expand digital access and streaming to connect with islanders near and far

Keep the doors open and mics live

Time is critical — without funding, we could be forced off the air permanently.
