The COVID-19 pandemic has had a particularly harsh effect on Kinetic Arts Tucson. We’re scared and heartbroken to finally tell the public: KAT is on the verge of shutting down forever.
The few grants and loans that came through for us are used up. We’ve been applying for new ones almost every day with only piecemeal success. Meanwhile we have to pay for our full rent and other operational costs.
We’re no strangers to zero income. But we’re now so far in debt this can’t go on. We can’t ask teachers to work for no pay at all, and we can’t let our director go further into personal debt and put herself and her family at further risk. Brenna is being pushed to her limit financially, mentally, and emotionally. She knew it would be hard to be a working-class single mother of color opening her own pole studio. But she couldn’t have anticipated coronavirus.
You know: These traumatic times are taking a toll on everyone’s hearts and minds.
Many of you reading this are able to keep going because of the healing energy you get through pole, lyra, gymnastics and other dance. Many others have experienced the joy of watching a performance at KAT or seeing a loved one be transformed by their passion for the pole, lyra, or tumbling they do with us.
Still others of you have only heard of KAT—maybe through an artist who’s shown their work here, a musician who’s played here, or an invitation to one of our clothing exchanges or food drives. Still, you know what a part of the community we are.
But we can’t help our community without the help of our community.
Please help Brenna continue in her dream of bringing healing, athleticism, and art Tucson. Please help our instructors continue to teach the thing they love most in the world. Please help KAT keep providing the tools, teachers, and training space to empower Tucsonans through movement, art, and music.
