Hamo Azhari has been stranded in Istanbul airport custody since September 28th and is due to be deported to Sudan, this Wednesday, October 30th, due to a transit visa issue.
Hamo is an ex-Muslim who fled his home country of Sudan, where the penalty for apostasy is death. The 21 year old’s life is in danger because he has renounced his religion. He is an "apostate" from Islam, and therefore subject to incarceration, and a sentence of capital punishment according to Article 126 of the Sudan Criminal Act of 1991.
Since leaving Sudan in Oct 2018, he has been largely homeless and trying to find a safe place to live. His extended family have attacked and threatened him on several occasions.
I have personally had correspondence with Hamo and situation has been assessed by a refugee worker on the ground in Cairo and another reliable source who can confirm that his need is real. Hamo needs our financial help to reach a safe country, as his life is in danger.
It is a human right to be allowed to have freedom of religion, but also the right NOT to practise religion. A distinction should be made between criticising ideas and violating human rights, as this is the only way forward. .
