Sarah's Volunteering in El Salvador
Donation protected
Through my current position at South Shore Habitat for Humanity, I have been given the amazing opportunity to travel to El Salvador to build homes and support families internationallly. Our mission is to build strength, stability, and self reliance through affordable homeownership.
Here on the South Shore we are currently building our 58th home, and have helped 98 adults and 192 children.
As you can imagine, the economy, cost of building, and homes are quite different in El Salvador. As a Christian based organization, we tithe (donate 10%) of all of our unrestricted donations to our sister affiliate in El Salvador. To date, we have donated $585,000 and built 209 homes for the Salvadoran community.
Important to mention: those close to me know my opinions about volunteering internationally, and it boils down to doing your homework. Often times volunteering internationally can hurt their economy or create unsustainable programs. This IS different. This trip donates money DIRECTLY to an established organization in El Salvador. Plus, the work we can accomplish in a week speeds up their building process which in turn provides more work to local artisans.
If you want to learn more about Habitat or this trip specifically, you can visit: https://sshabitat.org/el-salvador. Below is a slide show of pictures from past trips taken.
The funds I am seeking are primarily for the costs of construction and donations made to the El Salvador affiliate. This is why you will see a donation made from my family, as I have asked them to withold christmas gifts this year and help pay for my flight. If I exceed goal, any additional funds will be donated directly to South Shore Habitat for Humanity.
Even if you can't donate, feel free to talk to me about the trip, pray for safe travel, fufilling service, and a productive week. This will be my first time traveling internationally, so I will gladly accept all the warm thoughts!
