SARAH ST. FENCE PROJECT

Jerry Welch and Nicole Grant are property owners and long time residents in the historically significant Ville Neighborhood of St. Louis City. They contacted North Side Community Housing Inc. (NCHI) and subcommittee Young Friends of the Ville (YFV) for assistance in constructing a fence around their properties, 2529 and 2531 North Sarah Street. The Welch's attempted to build a fence around their property themselves however,  their work was destroyed due to a police chase which ended at their property. They consequently did not have the funds to complete their project nor did the police or city provide any assistance.

The project will install an estimated total of 310 Linear Feet of wooden fence with two gates. With the support of the 4th Ward's Alderman, Samuel Moore, we hope to compliment the completed fence by replacing 6 square yards of sidewalk in front of the adjacent properties 2529 and 2531 N. Sarah St. In addition to the complimenting sidewalk work, with the volunteer workforce, we hope to plant shrubs at the property front for landscaping. The work will be completed using a volunteer work force composed of community members from active groups in the St. Louis region, including Young Friends of the Ville, the Urban League Young Professionals, and others.

This fence project will help beautify and better secure the couple’s property. It will prevent people from cutting through their yard to get to the alley or other yards west of theirs. It will also benefit the block, and the surrounding neighborhood through supplementing the construction work along Sarah St. in which NCHI is currently involved.

Young Friends of the Ville is asking for donations towards the purchase of material for the fence including lumber, concrete mix, hardware such as screws and gate latches, and equipment totaling $5000.00. NCHI is a 501 (c)(3) organization. Donations are tax deductible.
