Sahilpreet Singh, a bright and ambitious 19-year-old international student from India, had been pursuing his dreams in Canada since September 2024. He was studying at Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario, with a passion for learning and a drive to succeed. His family, belonging to a Sikh average-earning household, had made immense sacrifices to support his education abroad. They had taken loans exceeding $50,000 CAD from the bank, a significant burden for a middle-class family.
Tragedy struck on December 24, 2024, when Sahilpreet suddenly experienced severe stomach pain. He was rushed to Lakeridge Health Hospital in Oshawa, where medical professionals quickly sprang into action. Despite their best efforts, Sahilpreet's condition rapidly deteriorated. His kidneys failed, and infection spread to other organs, plunging his family and friends into a nightmare.
For 18 days, Sahilpreet underwent dialysis and was placed on a ventilator, fighting for his life. His family and loved ones held vigil, praying for his recovery. However, despite the medical team's valiant efforts, Sahilpreet showed no signs of improvement. In a last-ditch effort, he was transferred to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, a renowned medical facility.
At St. Michael's Hospital, Sahilpreet received the best possible care, but his body had suffered irreparable damage. He fought bravely for two days, but ultimately succumbed to internal bleeding, liver failure, and swelling of the brain on January 12, 2025. The news of his passing sent shockwaves through his family, friends, and the college community.
