I am godmother to a wonderful, beautiful, and funny gender fluid girl who goes by the name Sabrina. I was the birth coach and had the honor of cutting the umbilical cord after delivery. I have watched this young shy kid, who was afraid of his own shadow, blossom into a confident and silly karaoke singer whenever she puts on her "dress of courage". She really came out of her shell and into her own once she realized she could be her true self. The photo for this campaign is one of us taken at her very first Pride event, the day she re-introduced herself to me as Sabrina.
She has a supportive mother and step father who are helping her find her way, but unfortunately she also has a father who is not as understanding about her gender fluidity. He has taken it as far as suing her mother for full custody because he believes that this is not who his child is, and that her mother is forcing it upon the child. Even after attending a session at the Stanford Gender Clinic and having them confirm that Sabrina is indeed happily Gender Fluid of her own accord, her father is refusing to believe - he is constantly mis-gendering her and using her old masculine name (Sebastian), which is making life difficult for her on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, because the father is wealthy and has a great law firm behind him, and the mother does not - on September 11th, 2018 TEMPORARY full custody was granted to the father. Since that day, the father has refused Sabrina to have any contact with her mother, not even phone calls have been allowed. This was not a decision of the court, but his own attempt to distance them from each other.
Sabrina's mother has found some wonderful free help and resources from some LGBTQ+ places, but has yet to find a reasonably priced attorney. She has spent the last 3 weeks interviewing over a dozen attorneys and as you can imagine, with such a unique case, it has proven quite difficult and costly. The retainer for the most competent attorney she found is $8000 for the whole case, start to finish. She has been working extra jobs every single day but she needs a lawyer now.
