Student nurse placement in Ghana

Donation protected
I am a student mental health nurse in my 2nd year of training and I have been given the opportunity to study for 4 weeks in Ghana, Takoradi. I will be working for 2 weeks in the psychiatry department in the hospital, where my role will change between working with outpatients, inpatients, travelling into the community and visiting people throughout all the hospital departments. For my third week, I will have the opportunity to experience a different department, including maternity, emergency department, infectious diseases' and the HIV clinic. I will then trek into one of the rural villages and stay with a local family for my final week. I will be working in the village healthcare centre, which is the primary source of healthcare for the locals as the hospital is much further away, and conducting community outreach at the local primary schools.

In Ghana, 2,816,000 people are diagnosed with a mental health disorder, with only 16 psychiatrists within the whole country. The mental health system in Ghana has not advanced much in the last 100 years, in comparison to the UK, and shackling individuals living with a mental health disorder was only made illegal in 2012. However, the government is still trying to enforce this. I will not only be learning about the culture and developing new skills, I will be sharing my knowledge and clinical skills with the nurses and students in Ghana, with the hope of enhancing their care. Previous students, that have travelled with Work the World, have retold how the healthcare professionals were not trained in CPR, so they were responsible for performing this in an emergency and teaching the local staff.

I am going to be walking 2,816,000 steps between 1st October to when I leave in May 2020, for each individual living with a mental health disorder in Ghana.

All donations are really appreciated. The money will go towards my fees and donations towards the hospital. The consultant has advised that I take the money for donation with me and find out which equipment the hospital urgently needs, e.g. if there is an epidemic, and purchase and provide these once I'm there.
