Ryan's Global Health Program

Donation protected
As you may know, global health, particularly international global health, is a passion of mine. I've previously participated in week-long mission trips to Honduras, Cameroon, and Philippines. I'm now stepping up my game and planning to spend an entire month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in March 2018! I was fortunate enough to be selected into Emory's Global Health Residency Scholars Program and will spend the month teaching and helping instruct Ethiopian ENT and medicine residents. We are the first ENT group to participate with this global health program so there is a lot of room for impact. They mostly do not have access to current medical books, journals, or articles and the teaching and information we can share is immense. Implementing and finding creative strategies to improve patient care and outcomes of their citizens that can be sustained in the low-resource setting long after we leave is the ultimate goal. An alternative goal is to find some Ethiopian food that I will actually like, ha!

I'm pretty dang excited for this month long trip! One of the coolest aspects of my previous humanitarian trips is I did similar fundraising for my Cameroon trip.  I was able to raise over $2400 from just friends (20s and 30 somethings!). Despite all the things us milennials get blamed for, one thing that can't be mistaken is our generation's ability to be very giving and supportive when they know there is an impact to be made.

Currently, I make a comfortably living in residency but not enough to just go traveling over to Africa at will , and specifically not enough for an entire month (despite what they say about doctor's salaries, ha) I've done a lot of praying about this and would be honored for you to consider being a part of my trip by providing any kind of financial support you feel necessary.  If you don't feel that supporting financially is something you are interested in, then I would just love your thoughts and prayers concerning the trip. Would love to discuss the trip with you if you have any questions. Please send me an email or call/text me. Thank you.

This is a photo of Dr. Gregg Schmedes and I from my trip to Mbingo Hospital in Cameroon back in 2015. Much of the time we spent teaching the local surgeons and healthcare staff how to to take care of patients long after we have left the hospital so there is sustainability.

I was much younger in my medical career when I visited Honduras in 2010 (pictures below), but still medical education was one of focuses of the trip. The focus of the children in the photos is most likely wondering what in the world this tall gringo is saying, ha. (I'm wondering where all my hair went!)
