Run 180: Black Lives Matter

My name is Maxine and I am a sophomore in high school and a cross-country runner. My mission this year is to find a way to make a difference in the world. This summer, some fellow runners and I will be running to raise money for Campaign Zero, a charity dedicated to improving police-community interactions, and addressing the causes of police brutality. I know that we can make a real impact together.

Poor police-community relations and resultant brutality incidents are at an all-time high in this country. In 2019 alone, there were over 1,000 fatal police encounters, and only 27 days where police did not kill someone. Of these 1,000 fatalities, 24%  were Black, despite Black people only making up about 13% of America's population. The only way to change this is for everyone to get involved and it can start here. This change needs to happen now.

As a young adult watching the news and hearing about the injustice within the system, I want to make a lasting change. I want to make sure that future generations don't experience the same fear and that both police and the citizens they serve can feel safer in an uncertain world. There needs to be justice brought to Breonna Taylor, David McEntee, George Floyd, Ahmaud Aubrey, and the others that have fallen victim to systemic racism in America. The change that has to happen in this country is so much bigger than a few people, but if we work together, real change can be made. So start here, and be a part of making a difference.

For every dollar that is donated, one mile will be run. No matter how large the funds get, my team and I will find a way to run off every mile. I am determined to earn your donations by working hard on my training this summer. Anything will help, so please support and donate.
