RISE FOR MOZAMBIQUE

On the 15th of March, one of the fiercest recorded tropical cyclones boarded central Mozambique’s shores. Long-lived cyclone Idai generated maximum sustained winds of up to 195km/h coupled with torrential downpours severely affecting parts of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Ranked as the 3rd most severe tropical cyclone on record, the scale of the devastation left in its wake is difficult to comprehend from afar; 90% of Beira, Mozambique’s fourth largest city destroyed, mass flooding stretching 2,165 km2 (more than DOUBLE the size of Berlin) causing mass displacement of more than 100,000 people, and taking the lives of more than 1000. It’s an event that will forever be marked in the Mozambican collective conscience.

RISE FOR MOZAMBIQUE, a collaborative project by RISE, HEKAYA, Perspectiv Arts Kollectiv and Fundação Fernando Leite Couto aims to generate funds to aid in the reconstruction of two schools located in some of the most severely affected areas; Escola Primária Completa heroís Moçambicanos, Beira city and Escola Primária Monte Siluvo, Nhamatanda District. The central event will be hosted at Watergate Club on the 20th of June, hosting artists DJ Paulo Alves, Mr Raoul K, Floyd Lavine and more. At their discretion artists will be donating a part of their fee, and as an effort to broaden this project's reach we have created this crowd funding campaign.

The allocation of funds collected will be handled and put to work by the Fundação Fernando Leite Couto - a Maputo based foundation established by prominent Mozambican author Mia Couto. The foundation specifically "works with various relevant actors in the cultural sector, helping to promote a wide range of activities in the specific field of literature and, more generally, in the wider fields of arts and culture." Since the cyclone however, the Foundation has extended its reach from cultural based initiatives to infrastructural rehabilitation in some of the most affected parts of the country. How are we related to the organization? The organization itself is actively involved in projects with artists that we've worked with before. Its an organization that has always striked confidence given the number and scale of projects it has supported in the past.

With the aid of the Mozambican Red Cross, the foundation has already managed to rebuild significant parts of the aforementioned schools. In Monte Siluvo, the 1340 school students are subjected to individual classes containing up 140 students due to the destruction of infrastructure caused by the strong winds and flooding. With only two remaining partially roofed structures, the grand majority of students study in precarious, improvised classrooms built with wooden beams and sheltered by corrugated zinc sheets. The local church has offered temporary space capable of holding 270 students.

In Beira, a school once containing 930 enrolled students and 14 classrooms has been downgraded to all but 5 working classrooms. To keep the school functioning, and to ensure that all students are able to continue their studies management has had to pair up grades and increase the number of school shifts from 2 to 3.

How money will be handled: Once the our goal of 2500 Euros is reached, we will withdraw the funds to a private account (of team member Stefano Capello) to be transferred directly via an online bank transfer from our German account to the the foundations Portuguese account.

We are grateful for help in all of its forms - donate, share, get involved. We will keep everyone updated with progress made.
